International Women’s Day 2017: Reasons Tiwa Savage may be Best Female Nigerian singer
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day 2017, we cannot help but celebrate some female singers who have created a niche for themselves in our world.
One of such would undoubtedly be Tiwatope Savage-Balogun, better known by her stage name Tiwa Savage.
She is a singer, songwriter, performer and actress who is currently signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing as a songwriter.
The 37-year-old mother of one signed a recording contract with Mavin Records in 2012 and she officially became ‘Mavin First Lady’.
She also signed a management and publishing deal with International act, Jay Z’s Roc Nation in June 2016,
Savage sings in English and Yoruba.
As a singer, her achievements include two City People Entertainment Awards, two The Headies Awards, one MTV Africa Music Award, one Channel O Music Video Award, one Nigeria Music Video Award, and many others.
No doubt, with all these achievements, one can say she is the most successful female songster in Nigeria, maybe in Africa too?
The ‘Kele Kele Love’ crooner recently talked about her Roc Nation deal.
She insisted she wasn’t going to change her style to suit some perceived global audience and also debunked rumours of leaving Mavin Records.
She also established her publishing deal with Sony/ATV music publishing as still dealing with songwriting.
She spoke with Notjustok TV about this, saying “ I am signed to Roc Nation under management contract and Mavin is still my family and label.
“What I love about when Jazzy and I met Jay Z was that he didn’t want me to change, he specifically said that was what attracted him and the company to us.
“I’m urging my fellow artists to maintain their essence so they can stand themselves out.
“As much as we want to cater to the global market, the home front should not be neglected.”
Savage used award shows as a point of reference, saying categories such as Best Artist and Best Album should include more of female nominees, instead of just restricting them to Best Female category.
She was responding to the inclusion of female artists in the industry.
As a woman, she is a go-getter.
Although her 2-year-old marriage to Teebillz crashed, Savage did not give up, she forged ahead not letting anything weigh her down.
However, there are indications that the couple have settled their scores and are living together again after they were spotted at Stephanie Coker’s wedding in Lagos State sometime in January.
Here’s to all women. You may want to borrow a leaf from her.
