The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has announced a conditional suspension of its nationwide strike which started five weeks ago on August 13, 2017. ASUU suspends strike.

The suspension of the strike was announced on Monday evening after a meeting with the government delegation and the union directed university lecturers to resume duty from today, Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

ASUU suspends strikeASUU had commenced the indefinite nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill the 2009 agreement made with the union. During the strike, ASUU had said there was going to be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of ASUU branches till government meets the union’s demands.

ASUU and the Federal Government Negotiation Team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige had lurked in the meeting that started about 4.00pm which was supposed to last for about one hour, but it dragged for about four hours before agreement was reached on all contending issues.

Briefing journalists after the meeting which ended at about 7.55pm, Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige said all the gray areas have been sorted out and an agreement reached. Adding that members of the ASUU union had insisted that they were tired of having agreements that are not implemented.

ASUU suspends strikeThe National President of ASUU, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi, also told journalists that in event the government in her characteristic nature failed to implement the agreement, the union will not hesitate to take appropriate action, adding that all the items on the list have a timeline.
